gravy this saturday @ loplops

hey kids,
i know it's been a really long time since i've last posted...but i still love you (both of you who still visit the site....).  a few new developments happening....i now play in a cool outfit with mark kuntsi, lindsay pugh and ed young called "honeythroat" (playing in june at foggy notions on queen street).  we play a lot of mark's songs from bands in the past he has fronted, and some really fun covers ("kiss" by prince por ejemplo...).  talk has been swirling about us writing some toons together, which would be a-ight.

i also play in a neat-o trio with ed young and one mr. craigory west...we each take a set as the singer-songwriter with the other guys providing a rhythm section behind us.  my most favoritest part is playing drums and bass behind ed and craig...something different, you know?

there is much more, but i will have to spread it out over the next couple of posts...to make sure i don't slack like i've been.  did you miss me?  i've missed you...
oh boy...
fun with pictures

well, although it's been one half of one month since the show, curt o'neil has uploaded pictures of the 12 musicians of christmas at loplop lounge...and i am going to bring your attention to them, if you haven't already seen them.  curt has once again outdone himself with an array of dramatic shadowing and all of those other neat things photographers look at before they snap a shot.  click here to go to his photo gallery (betterthancrabs.com) and have a boo at some of the best band photography around, among other great fotos.  between he and slackhopper, someone should put together a coffee table book....hint, hint...

news and such

there are a tonne of things happening right now on the big wheel and the spokes front, you can see what i'm talking about by going here.  on top of this stuff, we are trying to get together some dates for a summer tour...this is in it's infant stages right now.
we have some gigs coming up...gravy this friday, which should be a blast!

i've been writing songs rather prolifically as of late and have been playing them live, along with a slew of old songs i hadn't played in ages.  frank and i had a really fun show at loplops last friday night, there were plenty of people there to celebrate megan cooper's birthday...21 again, huh megs??  you don't look a day over 18, i'll swear to it.

i then played an afternoon show at searchmont resort, which is always a touch-and-go scenario.  it can sometimes be HARD WORK....and i mean HARD.  this was the case with the first set, where people didn't realize i was there, or didn't care.

jay - "so, are you all enjoying the first real day of winter here at searchmont?"
audience - "..........*cricket*.........*sound of a tumbleweed rolling by*...........*fat guy belches*........etc."
jay - "just me, then....?"

then michigan university students showed up, all 80 of them, and saved the day.  a quick tip to get a crowd of uni students on your side - simply say "go blue" into the microphone...it's that easy.
*note*- this only works if the students (or a majority of them) attend michigan university in ann arbor, michigan.  i wouldn't suggest this tactic if the students attend michigan STATE university in lansing, michigan.  this could result in bodily harm to the entertainer, or worse.  luckily i was not this daft on this particular day and all was well from the second set on.  all in all, i had a blast....and thanks to steve alexander (from loplops lounge) and jaxon for spending the day with me...what a riot!

keep your eyes peeled for upcoming show dates and other news, the early winter dog days are over...it's time to get to work!

l8r,
jay

a quick reminder that i'll be doing an opening acoustic set at loplops tonight at around 7:30 pm, just before gates of winter does an acoustic set, and then IT does a full blown audio/visual explosion on your ass. there will be short films interspersed throughout the night as well...don't miss it. three music acts and 3 short films in one night, all for only $10! hope to see you there.

hi again,
well, i'm back from the european vacation!  carrie and i had an absolute blast and are jonesing to get back there soon.  we saw rome, paris, dublin (and all of southern ireland by car), edinburgh (and all of norhtern scotland by car), london (and a lot of south western england and wales by car), and palma de mallorca (a small island south of the spanish mainland).  i will be uploading a few pictures soon, keep checking back.

this past weekend patti good and the big bad band played a show at loplops.  this show was one of the most fun gigs i've done in a while.  how could you not have fun with a stacked lineup like this beside you?

frank deresti (guitar/banjo)
rachelle deresti (piano/accordion)
frank mccormack (snare/hi hat)
lindsay pugh (pedal steel guitar)
andrew muncaster (guitar)
sheldon jaaskelainen (fiddle)
patti goodwin (vocals)

i played bass for the show and it was a lot of fun.  crank sound distribution mixed the show, so it sounded kick-ass...be sure to make it out to the next show if you can...bring your cowboy hat!

here's a link to a story by the ever observant donna hopper of sootoday.com.
NEW TUNE ADDED

hey guys, sorry again for the really sparse updates...you'd think i was chris belsito or something!  i've uploaded another song for your listening pleasure...it's from a couple of years ago at loplops.  this cat named roberto bellan came over from italy and we did a couple of shows with him...this particular show consisted of myself and mr. clifton along with roberto on the hammond organ.  it was one of the most fun gigs i've ever done...the energy was amazing and it was really neat to play off of an organist for the first time.  i was rifling through some old cd's and came across this show, this is the first song we played to warm ourselves up, just a free jam.  listen close, mr. clifton is on fire on this slow shuffle.
i hope you enjoy it, i certainly did!

take care,

jay
some media coverage of second stage/cd release
Posted: Thu Jul 20, 2006 - 01:42 PM

we had a fantastic time at second stage again this year, it was a great success....even with the rain and high winds on friday.  the whole event was moved into loplops friday night, and everyone who played, played well with everyone attending enjoying themselves all night.  click here to read a story by sootoday.com, where tyler simpson "picks on jay case"....why are the biggest guys always bullies?

click here to read another great story by donna hopper regarding the events of the whole second stage festival....all the while realizing you should have been there this year (if you weren't), and most certainly will be next year.

second stage thursday and friday
Posted: Tue Jul 11, 2006 - 09:23 PM
hey all,
i'm reminding everyone out there that the highlight of the year in music in sault ste. marie is just around the corner....rotary fest (second stage, most notably).  i'm doing a set with the very talented shauna major (along with ed young and lindsay pugh) at 5:00 pm thursday, then again at 8:00pm with the chris belsito band (with craig west, ed young and lindsay pugh).  friday at 9:00pm big wheel and the spokes take the stage, and then over to loplops for our cd release party.  snap, yo!  that's a busy couple of days!  (and a lot of links....)

blogelation horizontal ad

i hope you can make it down to the grassy field across from the civic centre, but if you can't, you should definitely take a look at blogelation.  people will be blogging about second stage as it happens.....giving reviews of music, commentary, and more.  murderfly multimedia's very own curt o'neil is one of said bloggers....we all know what pretty pictures he takes!
anyhow, have a boo at the link and check it out come thursday....or we'll see you there....or both!
ciao,

jay
i'm not drunk....you're drunk!

hey kids,

photo courtesy of tyler simpson, sootoday.com

thanks to all those who came to bottoms up to check out the lounge, it's a cool little joint, n'est pas?  frank and i enjoyed it immensely (see above - do i look like i enjoyed myself?) and are sure to return, if asked.  the lovely and talented tyler simpson of sootoday.com was in attendance to snap some fotos and partake in a libation or two.  see what he has to say here

on another note, our most favoritist photographer, donna hopper, has a job at sootoday.com as well.  congratulations donna!!!  she is an excellent wordsmith as well as a music lover of the highest degree, with wide tastes.  she should bring an exciting brand of coverage to the entertainment section.  carol martin will be moving away from the entertainment section in order to take on other responsibilities, as i understand it....thanks for your help and support, carol, good luck!
bottoms up!
Posted: Fri Jun 23, 2006 - 04:14 PM
just a reminder that the incredible edible frank deresti and i are playing a show this fine evening at bottoms up lounge.  it is located directly above vincenzo's restaurant at 280 queen street....right down town.  it is a small and intimate venue with limited room, so come down early and grab a seat.
in other news, frank and i were in the studio this past weekend, laying down bed tracks for an upcoming full length album of acoustic material.  things went very quickly and we have quite a few songs recorded.  to hear what this album will sound like, come to bottoms up this evening!
see you there....

jay
